Betel Leaf Amazing Benefits that common people don’t know

Betel leaf is a vine from the family of Piperaceae, mostly consumed in India and Asia as a 'Paan' along with 'Arcea Nut' or tobacco. While many look at it as 'Paan' consumed after a good meal or just as a habit, it also has a significant place during religious rituals in India.

My Granma (both mom’s and dad’s mom) chew betel leaf on a regular basis, Buying betel leaf is one of the regular activities I always enjoy, I even enjoy helping them clean the leaves and pack them in a box that they use for storing the leaves.  After every midday meal, they relax by chewing a betel leaf with all other ingredients stored in the box. I love to watch them chew their betel leaf and wait patiently for the miracle to happen.  Within minutes a lovely bright scarlet red color fills their entire month especially the tongue I m awestruck.

Then I remember in wedding ceremony they use to keep betel leaf in a big plate in several places in the marriage hall (Mandapam), we as kids play with them and also elders ask our help to get them betel leaves. Most of the people while they talk with relatives and friends they will chew the betel leaves with other condiments. Most people don’t know the health benefits of this but because it was a custom they use them.

Even now when going out for a heavy lunch, I eat betel leaves to digest food, not only I do it, most of the people after a heavy lunch eat “Paan”. These Paan shops are located in front of all the restaurants, a very good strategy for the paan vendor.
